Birmingham Paradise takes centre stage at 2022 Commonwealth Games
Birmingham has lived up to its reputation as one of Britain’s youngest and most diverse cities after successfully hosting the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Athletes from 72 nations and territories took part in the biggest sporting programme in the event's history, with around 6,500 competitors and officials travelling to Birmingham for the Games.
Thousands of sports fans flocked to Birmingham to witness the competition and spectacle - originally due to be held in Durban - with Birmingham Paradise playing an integral role in the visitor experience.
Paradise, the latest chapter in Birmingham’s compelling story, is considered by many to be the most important development that the city has seen in a generation: a place where commerce and culture can come together in harmony to create a new urban neighbourhood right in Birmingham’s civic and historic heart.
It’s fantastic to see the buzz around Birmingham for the Commonwealth Games. Chamberlain Square has taken centre stage and become a real focal point for residents of Birmingham and visitors to come together and enjoy the sporting spectacle. The Square, with its ample seating, water feature, planted terraces and surrounding restaurants, has provided the perfect backdrop to enjoy the coverage in a relaxed and inclusive environment.
One of the biggest attractions for visitors to Birmingham throughout the 2022 Commonwealth Games was the incredible ‘Birmingham Bull’, first unveiled during the Opening Ceremony and now due to remain in the city until September.
The diverse history of Birmingham is one of the reasons we were successful in our bid for the 2022 Commonwealth Games and the way residents and visitors have embraced the Bull shows how important this is. “The Opening Ceremony’s narrative illustrated how, by working together and understanding each other, we can overcome barriers and continue having challenging conversations looking forward to creating a bolder and more inclusive Birmingham.
The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games has been praised for its approach to sustainability, “setting a high standard” and going further than previous major events.
