"The Vine Web" Seoul International Garden Show

This garden emerged as a focal point of the 2021 Seoul International Garden Show. Nestled within the 150-square-meter expanse of Namdaemum-ro Culture Park, “The Vine’s Web,” a meandering magenta installation, was a key feature aligned with the central event theme: “Link Garden, Think Life.” This thematic choice sought to underscore the intricate connections shared among individuals and nature, as well as the symbiotic relationship between the urban landscape and the garden space.

Organized by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, this annual event showcased 58 gardens contributed by designers from seven countries: the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, the United States, Spain, Colombia, France, and South Korea. Originally slated for October 2020, the event faced postponement due to COVID-19 restrictions, prompting a strategic decision by the city government to host the show in 2021 across multiple locations on a smaller scale. This precautionary measure aimed to prevent large crowds from congregating in one place, thus minimizing the risk of coronavirus transmission.

Among the captivating installations, including “The Vine’s Web,” approximately half of the gardens remained in situ post-show, providing residents of Seoul an enduring opportunity for enjoyment. The overarching theme of the Seoul International Garden Show, centred around our connection to the natural world, resonated deeply with our team. The design we conceptualized serves as a visual testament to the intricate interweaving of elements in nature, creating a cohesive whole.

Crafted as a three-dimensional experience, our installation softens the harsh urban environment, establishing niches and microhabitats that invite meaningful interactions within and around it. The intention is for visitors to immerse themselves in this organic creation, fostering a sense of connection to the broader world. Deliberately employing a vibrant magenta hue, the installation offers a striking contrast to its urban surroundings, transforming into a luminous beacon at night and contributing to the distinctive ambiance of Seoul’s cityscape.
