Queens Quarter & The Queens Gardens
Croydon, London
Queen’s Quarter is located on the former Taberner House site in central Croydon, opposite the Croydon Council offices and near to Croydon Town Hall. The site is home to a well used public space, The Queen’s Gardens, which sits on two levels; a sunken historical garden (1915) and a more recent upper garden (1984).
Grant Associates worked alongside architects AHMM to create a distinctive and high-quality landscape and public realm which forms 1.3 hectares of the 1.55 hectare site, and is integral to the project’s success.
The overall concept uses The Queen’s Gardens as the unifying element of the site, extending a ground plane onto which the buildings sit.
The importance of the site as a community green space is acknowledged and treated with respect and sensitivity. As such, a community engagement process led by Kaizen worked alongside the design process to identify the local views, needs, desires and opportunities to enhance a well-loved public green space.
A new play space has been designed along with a new square, to address additional uses and facilities within the park. High quality materials and sensitivity to existing trees and historical features will ensure The Queen’s Gardens will respond to the needs of the community.
The project was completed and opened to the public in the summer of 2022.
