Paradise: a new civic heart for Birmingham
Paradise is at the centre of Birmingham’s transformation — a once-in-a-generation redevelopment that has reshaped the city’s civic identity.
Working as part of a collaborative design team, Grant Associates has led the landscape and public realm design for this ambitious project. The result is a connected sequence of spaces that blend contemporary architecture with the city’s historic landmarks, creating a new civic quarter for Birmingham.
Our new short film captures Paradise in action. From sweeping aerial views to close-up details, the film reveals the evolving rhythm of the spaces, animated by the daily flow of people. It tells the story of a city centre renewed — a place where heritage and modernity meet, and where Birmingham’s civic life can thrive.
At the heart of the scheme is Chamberlain Square, reimagined as a welcoming space that encourages both movement and pause. Here, generous pedestrian routes are combined with places to sit, meet, and reflect around the restored historic fountain. The surrounding streets and squares knit together the city’s cultural, business, and retail destinations, enabling seamless connections across the city centre. The design prioritises people — supporting everyday life while creating settings for events, gatherings, and moments of quiet enjoyment.
