Designs by Grant Associates in shortlist for redevelopment of Bristol’s St Mary Redcliffe Church

A design by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and landscape architect Grant Associates has been shortlisted for the £15m redevelopment of St Mary Redcliffe Church in Bristol.

The two Bath based practices are collaborating to create a scheme that aims to transform visitors’ experience of Bristol’s iconic church, while improving facilities for parishioners and better connecting the church with its surrounding ‘urban village’.

FCBS and Grant Associates’ design concept emerge from shared ideas about context, history, symbolism, identity, behaviour, culture and space.

The scheme incorporates a contemporary extension with a colonnaded south-facing frontage which contains a new gallery, hospitality facilities and staff spaces; a new community hub south of the church and sensitive enhancements to the landscape and public realm designed to unite the two sites and the community.

The submission by FCBS and Grant Associates is one of five designs to have made the shortlist in the St Mary Redcliffe Design Competition. Over 50,000 tourists visit the church each year in addition to local parishioners. The site has seen little development since just after the Second World War.

A public exhibition of the finalists’ designs for church is currently on site. The winning team is expected to be announced in late spring 2016.
