Construction Work Begins on Watermark
Construction work has begun on Watermark, one of Southampton city centre’s major rejuvenation projects on behalf of developers Hammerson Plc. The Grant Associates public realm scheme forms part of a £70m leisure and retail complex that is due for completion in late 2016.
The design responds to the historic significance of the site, drawing reference and inspiration from the line between sea and land; the Town Walls as the static resilient edge of the historic centre of Southampton and the sea as an ever changing, playful counterpoint.
This relationship has been reflected in the design of a bold new plaza space, with a distinct mudflat pattern pavement enlivened with an array of water jets which allow localised depressions to fill and empty like an incoming tide.
