Appleby Blue Almshouses shortlisted for 2025 Stirling Prize

Appleby Blue Almshouses in Southwark, London – with landscape design by Grant Associates – has been shortlisted for this year’s RIBA Stirling Prize, the UK’s highest accolade for architecture. It was a privilege to be part of the team and to help deliver a project with such an important social purpose.

Commissioned by United St Saviour’s Charity and designed by Witherford Watson Mann Architects, the scheme reimagines the traditional almshouse model, offering affordable, independent homes for older people in the city centre.

Grant Associates worked closely with the client and design team to create a landscape that places community, wellbeing and ecology at its heart. Shared gardens, a central courtyard and planted roof top terraces provide space for residents to meet, connect and enjoy nature, helping to nurture a strong sense of belonging.

The project is widely seen as a blueprint for age-friendly housing, showing how architecture and landscape can combine to deliver both social and environmental benefits.

The RIBA Stirling Prize winner will be announced later this year.
