Grant Associates undertook the landscape design for this sustainable housing project, situated five kilometres east of Valladolid in Spain. The housing units will be built over a 40-year period until the scheme accommodates around 50,000 people. Office space and recreation facilities, including a theme park, are also provided. The design aims to preserve and enhance the existing character of the site, and to promote the use of sustainable water systems and solar energy. The landscape is built around a green central spine which is largely pedestrianised. Several green squares connect the north and south of the area and offer space for outdoor activities. New planting reflects the established vegetation, dividing the site into three different character zones with pine woods, agricultural vegetation and wetland habitat. The wetland is adjacent to the existing river and canal, and is designed in part as a nature reserve and also as a public park. The scheme is linked to Valladolid centre by a magnetic bus line and extended footpaths and cycle paths as sustainable alternatives to the existing road network.
