Newlands Common will be a new mixed-use development on the outskirts of Waterlooville in Hampshire. The masterplan aims to produce a high-quality, sustainable community of around 1,550 homes and up to 100,000 square metres of commercial space as well as areas for community facilities such as local shops, a medical centre, a café and a primary school. The quality of the built environment and public realm has been given high priority within the development, with the aim of establishing a unique and unified identity whilst enhancing the existing landscape character of the site.A range of different public open spaces throughout the development, focused on a large common, village green and a series of neighbourhood squares, will provide valuable recreational, play and social space within an attractive landscape setting. A mosaic of different habitats will be incorporated within these spaces, including integrated sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS) elements such as swales and retention basins, to create a distinctive, sustainable and ecologically rich environment. A set of design codes have been published to guide the future development whilst still allowing an affordable and creative approach.
