The strategic framework plan commissioned by Tees Valley Regeneration identified the refurbishment works of a tired public route (Cargo Fleet Road) as well as two underpasses (Sailor’s Trod and Marshfield Road) as being essential to improving the connectivity between Middlesbrough town centre and the new Middlehaven development.  Grant Associates were appointed to design and oversee the project;  our aim was to create an attractive, inviting and non-threatening landscape that challenges the perception of distance between the two destinations.

The completed works include a bold striped colour scheme that repeats on elements throughout, including the two well-lit underpasses, large tubular steel tree grilles and a retaining wall coping that attracts the attention of passers-by.  Rich blue clay paving with red highlight panels, along with high-quality lighting, guides the way from town centre to dockside.
