Bristol Harbourside

Grant Associates are undertaking the masterplanning and detail design to regenerate the heart of Bristol’s historic waterfront.

The landscape treatment of the public realm opens up the historic waterfront by accommodating key views, including those of the cathedral, strengthening the site’s visual connections with the city.   The creation of a vibrant series of spaces and routes enhances the floating harbour’s public realm, including new public squares and tree-lined avenues, and harbourside moorings with a new harbour inlet.  The Brunel Mile, a key pedestrian link from Temple Meads Station to the SS Great Britain, re-energises the harbour with access to the water’s edge.

Innovative features include a 40m x 8m green wall, fronting onto the central public space.  Floating reed beds in the harbour provide habitat opportunities. Also, a comprehensive programme of public art has been established with internationally renowned artists, working to integrate individual pieces with the wider landscape.
