South Camden School

Grant Associates were part of the winning bid team appointed by BAM Construction for South Camden Community School as part of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme. The demanding brief was dictated by the tight physical site constraints and included the requirement for the design to achieve ‘Very Good’ BREEAM accreditation.

Our landscape concept was based upon 3 linear ‘ribbons’ – an Activity Ribbon, a Productive Strip Ribbon and a Green Ribbon. These are connected by a number of physical ‘stitches’ which link the entrances of the adjoining school buildings. On-site water attenuation, plant species selection, outdoor teaching spaces, recreation areas and productive allotment gardens are integrated and embedded within the three Ribbons. A biodiversity ‘brown’ roof was also included to promote local biodiversity and insulate part of the new school buildings.

The scheme is part new-build, part refurbishment and through careful masterplanning the school has been able to remain operational throughout the construction period. Grant Associates appointment has been from initial concept design through to completion. Planning permission was granted in 2010 and the school is due to formally open in 2013.
