Scunthorpe Sports Centre

The Pods Sports Centre & Central Park in Scunthorpe aims to integrate the development of both elements into the established fabric of the park, to form a symbiosis between architecture, community, ecology and landscape.

There are four underlying themes to the landscape strategy: ‘a new gateway’; ‘movement and connections’; ‘a new heart’; and ‘water and biodiversity’.

A welcoming entrance into the park opens up access through new planting, restoration of existing gardens and creation of a new lagoon. The proposals feature a major new pedestrian link, the Boulevard – a wide central spine that includes new surfacing, lighting, an oak avenue and planting. The Boulevard leads to the heart of the site, where the park’s hub comprises play facilities, an events space and a café pavilion.

A sustainable design strategy will enhance the overall park setting through water systems and habitat creation. This includes the restoration of an existing fountain, the use of green roofs and the sustainable treatment of surface water run-off.
