Bridge Learning Campus is one of four new schools built in Bristol as part of the first phase of the government’s Building Schools for the Future (BSF) initiative. This is a large ‘all-through’ school, and the landscape strategy seeks to provide a unifying structure that responds to the needs of a wide spectrum of learners and offers a stimulating environment for education and play. The project reflects an environmentally responsive approach to water management, biodiversity, energy efficiency and resource use. Landscape features include a diversity of habitats and the creation of green corridors and spaces for outdoor teaching uses; sheltered play areas and courtyards; an outdoor events space; a sensory garden as a focus for pupils with severe learning difficulties; and an integrated site-wide sustainable urban drainage system (SUDS).The landscape forms an integral part of the school’s design, management and function. There is an emphasis on transparency, with direct and indirect views of the landscape offered at many points in and around the building, and a series of outdoor spaces and courtyards.
